Stroke is a major global health challenge. It ranks as the second-leading cause of death and the third-leading cause of disability worldwide. Factors such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, smoking, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, obesity, and excessive alcohol consumption can all increase the risk of stroke.

May is Women’s Health Month. Fidelis Care Medical Director Dr. Alan Wieder answered common questions about osteoporosis. What is osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a medical condition where bones become weak and are more likely to break. The bones that are most commonly affected are the hips, the spine, and the wrists. Osteoporosis occurs when old bone cells are removed faster than they can be replaced by new bone cells. This causes bones to be less dense, weaker, and more likely to break.

Allergies are one of the most common chronic diseases. They are caused by the immune system’s reaction to allergens. Allergy symptoms happen when a person with an allergy comes into contact with the allergen. This can happen through ingestion, touch, or inhalation. The immune system tries to protect your body and fight off the allergen. This may cause symptoms like itchiness and rashes. In serious cases, allergic reactions can cause difficulty breathing, fainting, or even death.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), notes that about one in six U.S. children ages 6 to 17 experiences a mental health disorder each year, making this week a vital opportunity to explore the issue.
