October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to shed light on the many types of abuse that affect people across all communities. In observance of the month, Fidelis Care checked in with partners at We All Really Matter in New York City and Unity House in Troy to discuss how we can stand united in raising awareness and promoting resources for prevention and intervention.

September marks National Recovery Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about substance use treatment and mental health services that help people live healthier lives. The U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration shows that in 2021, more than 20 million Americans age 12 or older were in recovery from substance use disorders, highlighting the vital need for support and resources. This month, we honor the strength and resilience of those in recovery and the dedication of the professionals who support them.

Suicide is a major public health issue that leaves a tremendous impact on families, friends, and entire communities. Here are some facts: • Suicide is the second leading cause of death among people aged 10-14. • It is the third leading cause of death among people aged 15-24. • Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death overall in the United States. • Some people are affected more. Youth, veterans, and those living in rural areas are among those more likely to attempt suicide.

July is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This observance, also known as BIPOC Mental Health Month, is named after Moore Campbell for bringing awareness to the mental health needs of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. Erlinda Delacruz, MA, Director of Community Programs for The Jed Foundation (JED), shared insight into the importance of the month and how the organization is working to promote understanding and offer support.

In observance of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, Fidelis Care visited partner New Choices Recovery Center, an alcohol and drug treatment facility in Schenectady, and talked with Clinical Coordinator Meagan Rivers, LMHC, NCC, CCTP.

Children's Mental Health Awareness Week is May 5 to 11. Held during National Mental Health Awareness Month, this week highlights the importance of early detection, intervention, and support for children facing mental health challenges. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), notes that about one in six U.S. children ages 6 to 17 experiences a mental health disorder each year, making this week a vital opportunity to explore the issue.
