Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease, a condition that can develop over time when the kidneys are damaged and can’t filter waste out of your blood. Over time, this damage can get worse. It can lead to chronic kidney disease (CKD). In severe cases, it can lead to kidney failure, which may require dialysis or a kidney transplant. Diabetic kidney disease does not happen overnight. It progresses through several stages, starting with very mild damage and then more serious issues if not managed correctly.

Fidelis Care celebrates National Healthcare Quality Week October 20 – 26, 2024. This week, we thank our doctors, social workers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who make sure our members get the best care possible. We are also working to make things even better by listening to our members’ healthcare experiences to improve their quality of care. We are certified by the National Committee of Quality Assurance to ensure the quality of care you receive is always improving. Plus, we teach our members how to stay healthy with tips and resources. By focusing on detecting health problems early and preventing them, Fidelis Care helps our members stay healthy and avoid serious illness.

National Pharmacy Week is October 20 to 26. It’s a time to recognize the crucial role that pharmacists and technicians play in keeping our communities healthy. From personalized care to medication management, pharmacists and pharmacy workers are essential to improving patient outcomes and overall well-being. In observance of National Pharmacy Week, Fidelis Care talked with Clinical Pharmacy Team Lead Brett Douglas about his career journey.

October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to shed light on the many types of abuse that affect people across all communities. In observance of the month, Fidelis Care checked in with partners at We All Really Matter in New York City and Unity House in Troy to discuss how we can stand united in raising awareness and promoting resources for prevention and intervention.

Mental Illness Awareness Week is October 6 -12, 2024, with World Mental Health Day falling on October 10. In observance, HELP USA Senior Vice President of Development and Communications Samantha Conlan shared the below post on how her organization builds connections among formerly homeless adults. HELP USA is a 2024 Fidelis Care behavioral health program grant recipient.

October is National Dental Hygiene Month. Dental care is an important part of your overall health. Make sure you go to regular dental visits to help keep your smile healthy. During your appointments, the dentist can find any cavities early and treat them. Early treatment prevents them from getting worse.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in New York State. Each year in New York, more than 16,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and about 2,500 women die from the disease. Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms. Women at ages 40 to 74 years old should have this test every one or two years. Ask your PCP when you should get a mammogram.
