October is Health Literacy Month. Health literacy helps you understand health information so you can make good choices about your well-being. There are two parts of health literacy: 1. Health Literacy: Knowing how to get, understand, and use information to make good choices about your health. 2. Healthcare Literacy: Understanding how the healthcare system works, including knowing about insurance, medical terms, and treatment options.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in New York State. Each year in New York, more than 16,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and about 2,500 women die from the disease. Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms. Women at ages 40 to 74 years old should have this test every one or two years. Ask your PCP when you should get a mammogram.

September is National Childhood Obesity Month. Obesity rates among children in the U.S. have doubled since 1980 and have tripled for teens. About 19.7% of children ages 2 to 19 are considered obese. Children who take in too many calories and don't get enough exercise or sleep are at risk for obesity. Efforts to prevent obesity should begin early.

September 15-21 is National Farm Safety and Health Week, a time to reflect upon the well-being of those who produce the food on our tables. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the agricultural sector is the most dangerous in America with 453 fatalities in 2021.
