April is Alcohol Awareness Month. It is a time to learn about alcohol use, its impact on health, and available resources.
For some people, alcohol can become a serious health concern. Nearly one in 10 adults in the United States lives with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). AUD is a medical condition that affects brain chemistry, decision-making, and overall well-being. Recovery is possible, and help is available.
Understanding AUD
Alcohol Use Disorder is not a lack of willpower. It’s a chronic medical condition that can be managed with the right support. Signs of AUD can include:
- Drinking more or for longer than intended
- Wanting to cut down on drinking, but being unable to do so
- Feeling cravings or urges to drink
- Continuing to drink even when it causes problems at work, home, or in relationships
- Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not drinking
If you see these signs in yourself or a loved one, you are not alone. There are resources to help.
