Women’s Health

Staying healthy and well is one of the most important things women can do for themselves and for their loved ones, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are some ways women can put their health first:

Stay Active

Regular exercise can help women boost their mood, maintain a healthy weight, and improve sleep. It also lowers risk for heart disease, breast cancer, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Women should speak with their doctor about what type of exercise is right for them.

Eat Healthy
Eating healthy can help women improve their health and prevent diseases. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, as well as lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts. Avoid having too much sodium, sugar, cholesterol, saturated fats, and trans fats.
Get Regular Checkups
Regular checkups and wellness exams help women increase their chances of living a longer, healthier life. Women should check with their primary care provider about the care and screenings they need, and whether they should schedule an in-person or telehealth appointment.

Follow Recommended Screenings
Maintain Healthy Levels
A well-rounded diet and regular exercise can help keep women’s blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar at healthy levels. Women should talk to their primary care provider or heart specialist about safely reducing their risk and setting goals for a healthier heart.
Avoid Smoking
Smoking or using tobacco products greatly increases women’s risk of heart disease. Women who want to quit should speak to their primary care provider for help and to see if there are medications or nicotine replacement products that are right for them. Non-smokers who have high blood pressure or high blood cholesterol also have a greater risk of developing heart disease when they’re exposed to secondhand smoke.

Fidelis Care Partners with Rochester Regional Health Mobile Mammography Center
7/3/2024 • Posted by Fidelis Care

Fidelis Care partnered with Rochester Regional Health (RRH) to bring its Mobile Mammography Center to the FIGHT Village Apartments in Rochester. Fidelis Care invited women from across the neighborhood to receive no-cost mammograms.

Fidelis Care Community Relations Specialist Jayslynn Antonetti said, “On top of offering mammograms today, we have our pharmacy team here discussing blood pressure and glucose monitoring, which is also part of preventive care. We are also here to help people enroll or renew their health insurance and answer questions.”

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women. About one in eight women born in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Regular breast X-ray exams, known as mammograms, can detect cancer in its earliest stages.

RRH Mobile Mammography Program Supervisor Luann Perkins said, “We want women to start getting annual mammograms at age 40. It’s very important for women to get screened. We want to catch these cancers while they’re small so they’re treatable. We take four images, two on each breast. The compression is tight. It is not painful, but it is a little uncomfortable. We do a front view then we turn the machine and do a side view. It only takes about eight seconds.”

The Fidelis Care and RRH partnership brings the convenience of having a mammogram right to the doorstep of underserved communities in the Rochester area.

Perkins said, “It’s like one-stop shopping. You have Fidelis Care, you have a mammogram coach. It’s one and done. You are in and out quickly.”

Antonetti said, “We are bringing services right into our communities that are most in need. It’s important to Fidelis Care that we show our community that we are here for them and that we are supporting their needs, whether it’s health wise, family wise, access wise. So, we came today to make sure that our community is aware that we are here for them.”
