Women’s Health

Staying healthy and well is one of the most important things women can do for themselves and for their loved ones, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are some ways women can put their health first:

Stay Active

Regular exercise can help women boost their mood, maintain a healthy weight, and improve sleep. It also lowers risk for heart disease, breast cancer, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Women should speak with their doctor about what type of exercise is right for them.

Eat Healthy
Eating healthy can help women improve their health and prevent diseases. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, as well as lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts. Avoid having too much sodium, sugar, cholesterol, saturated fats, and trans fats.
Get Regular Checkups
Regular checkups and wellness exams help women increase their chances of living a longer, healthier life. Women should check with their primary care provider about the care and screenings they need, and whether they should schedule an in-person or telehealth appointment.

Follow Recommended Screenings
Maintain Healthy Levels
A well-rounded diet and regular exercise can help keep women’s blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar at healthy levels. Women should talk to their primary care provider or heart specialist about safely reducing their risk and setting goals for a healthier heart.
Avoid Smoking
Smoking or using tobacco products greatly increases women’s risk of heart disease. Women who want to quit should speak to their primary care provider for help and to see if there are medications or nicotine replacement products that are right for them. Non-smokers who have high blood pressure or high blood cholesterol also have a greater risk of developing heart disease when they’re exposed to secondhand smoke.

Fidelis Care and Mom Starts Here Open Baby Supplies Closet in the Utica Community Office
4/28/2025 • Posted by Fidelis Care

Fidelis Care and nonprofit maternal health organization Mom Starts Here recently partnered to open a Baby Item Network supplies closet at the Fidelis Care Utica Community Office. It’s free to all Medicaid recipients.

Schenectady-based Mom Starts Here supports expectant and new parents by providing baby items and education to address social needs. The Mom Starts Here Utica Baby Item Network closet is the first in a Fidelis Care Community Office and serves as a pilot for more at Fidelis Care sites across New York State.

Mom Starts Here Executive Director Kyla Schmidt said, “We have 10 Baby Item Network sites now with partners where we provide things like diapers, coats, onesies, pants, socks, and more. We also have other infant accessories like bibs, bottles, and blankets for families in need. So, we are really thrilled to have this partnership with Fidelis Care kicking off to provide these important resources in Utica.”

Mom Starts Here received a Fidelis Care Maternal Health Grant in 2023. Over the past two years, Fidelis Care has distributed more than $300,000 in grants to 18 organizations that play a vital role in ensuring safe pregnancies and healthy babies statewide.

“We are seeing parents struggling,” said Fidelis Care Sales and Marketing Director Shannon Lombardo. “This is such a great opportunity to offer baby supplies right here in our office. While visiting, parents can also speak with Fidelis Care representatives about other available resources and health insurance options including Child Health Plus, which provides comprehensive coverage for children under age 19.”

Hours for the Mom Starts Here Baby Item Network site at the Fidelis Care Utica Community Office, 209 Elizabeth Street, are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Walk-ins are welcome. Those interested in donating baby items can visit www.momstartshere.org/donations-accepted for more information.
