Stay Safe This Winter
1/13/2025 • Posted by Fidelis Care in Health and Wellness

Winter is in full swing, and the temperatures have been dropping. Here are a few tips for safety at home, on the road, and when you go outside.

At home:

  • Keep flammable items, like bedding, clothing, and curtains, away from heat sources. If you use a fireplace or similar way to keep warm, make sure things that can burn easily are at least three feet away. Space heaters can be dangerous, so use them very carefully, or not at all.
  • Install and test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. It's also a good time to replace the batteries. • Keep a supply of water and food that does not need to be kept cold.

On the road:

  • Keep your cell phone charged. (But don’t text and drive!)
  • Keep your gas tank full to avoid ice in the fuel lines.
  • Make an emergency box for your car that includes blankets, first aid kit, flashlight, food, jumper cables, sand or cat litter, snow shovel, and water.

Outside playing or working:

  • Be aware of the weather, and let people know where you are.
  • Keep walkways clear and salted.
  • If you are shivering and can’t stop, get inside and warm up with dry clothes.

With these tips, you can help to keep yourself and your family safe during the winter. To learn more, you can also visit the CDC website.
