New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald has issued a statewide non-patient-specific standing order for pharmacists in New York State to administer the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination to individuals ages 60 and older and to pregnant individuals. Patients will not need a separate prescription from providers to receive an RSV vaccine at participating pharmacies. This is an important update to the New York State Department of Health’s (NYSDOH) original standing order previously issued for older adults.
As per the NYSDOH, you are encouraged to recommend that all eligible patients receive the vaccine, especially since RSV can cause serious illness in older adults. It is also recommended for patients to get vaccinated in a timely manner as RSV season in New York most often occurs from September through January.
